RCZ-R went to limp home mode with EML on yesterday morning.

Pulled up and checked coolant, still full, had checked oil on Thursday, it was at max. (Still not topped up on either yet).

It started as usual no problems, after 5 minutes of driving the engine seemed to hesitate (constant speed not accelerating) and hit a small bump across the road - Engine Fault: Repair needed and EML and Limp Home Mode, had to carry on for another 3 minutes before pulling up, left engine running and fans going full blast, videoed it for proof!!!
Switched off and waited for fans to stop.
Started engine running fine then warning and EML and fans again.
Thought I'll have to continue and sort it later.
So seat belt on, engine off, start engine again and before warning can appear I accelerated off with higher revs, just as I'm changing to 3rd or 4th warning and EML and fans start, putting back to limp mode.
Anyhow gets to Asda finds a spot to park switches off lock car and goes shopping with fans going full tilt.
When I gets back to car all silent (was about 20 minutes).
Gets in and starts no warnings, so drives off, before I've covered 50 feet warning and EML come on but no fans.
As I'm driving pushes pedal and instant response, get out into the country on way back and accelerates to overtake another car straight to 70, continues on at a slower pace and reaches destination, locks car and don't use again until home time.
Along comes home time and I set off.
Warning and EML on but car runs faultlessly for 6 hours straight (Scotland to Bristol) at cruise control of 80 where possible 50 through roadworks.
Gets in car this morning no warning or EML, reported it to Peugeot who said need to get it in to have a look.
(Service Manager knows me well).

I think it might be a coil pack and with the bump in the road (only seen this from my cameras) co-insiding, possibly!?!

So first time in 2.5 years of ownership.

What is the mileage?
I'm going for the coils as well. Typical for what you have described. When HP pump goes the car is undriveable. No matter how often restarted.
RCZ R in red. driven daily. and driven hard.

You'll need to get a diagnostics done in order to retrieve the fault code/s.

It does however sound identical to the problem I had with the high pressure fuel pump (error code P0087).

The problem with my fuel pump lasted over 3 months before it was repaired, and became frequent as time progressed.

I was able to bypass the problem by turning the engine on and off again... sometimes it would take multiple attempts.

Actually, when my HP fuel pump was failing (first time i got error message) i was able to drive it as usual for few days. One day error message disappeared and reappeared the next day. Only on fifth day my RCZ went into limp mode and then i had my HP pump replaced :eusa-think:

Sounds similar to what I went through. It started with some hesitation but by the time the pump was too weak it was hardly possible to drive the car. Engine was running too rough, like on 2 cylinders, shaking badly. I hardly made it to my dealer.

But with the coils causing some issues as soon as the engine cooled down all things were fine. Yes, the error was stored but the engine run smoothly. Until the next hard acceleration and heat in the engine bay.

I still hope for tianorth it is just the coils. HP pump fails at about 50k miles or 3 years of driving. And even running on premium fuels only won't prevent it from failing. Just a piece of junk product (is it by Bosch or Valeo?) built to last only a short span of time.

I hope you manage to get your Z fixed soon Chris and hope it doesn't turn out to cost an arm and leg !

Incidentally if it was the Fuel pump - would it be covered by the warranty?

Well its only done 19k, and yesterday and today no warnings or errors or EML!

Just waiting for service manager to confirm Thursday (I've said to them they can keep it longer if they don't have time as I can use my bike.

Just had a conversation with the service manager at cribbs Bristol.
High pressure fuel pump has been replaced.
They will start up from cold on Monday.
Replaced under warranty.

Done under original warranty.

But the thing is it ran faultlessly for the run back to Bristol, 400 miles mostly sat at 80mph (5 hours 50 minutes) none stop.
Following week no errors!

On a related subject. I bought my 407 GT from Cribbs Causeway.
Drove down to Bristol on a Monday morning after a 12 hour shift. Got home about 11pm.
Won't be doing that again.

A bit more info.

Error code P0087 was stored, with technical note, so they replaced the high pressure fuel pump.
Said if more codes had been stored then it might be a longer investigation.

So after this the RCZ-R was driven home and parked up.
A yearly service was required on the 11th.
Now I'm up in Scotland, no job as yet, I travelled to Bristol to clear out my digs and get my car serviced.
The day of the service.
Got up and ready for 4:30am.
Got in car and started first time.
Drove to motorway, about 10 minutes.
Accelerated down slip road, just about to crossover to motorway lane when EML came on and error message saying engine fault.
Car was doing 83mph and felt fine, mpg was at 999mpg, crossed over the river hamble and started to go uphill, this is when engine was really shaking so decided to pull off at next junction.
Pulled in to Tesco's Burseldon.
Fans on full.
Switched off, waiting for fans to cut out.
Decided to move car, switched on went to start and fans cut out until engine was running.
So moved to a spot where I was out of the way.
Waiting for fans to cut out when I went to start the car but without starting it (so engine spins but didn't hold key long enough to start.
Fans stopped, switched off and removed key.
Got out of car and fans started again but slower.
Fans stop, so starts car and drives towards motorway, car not well, so heads back to Tesco's.
Parks up switches off and the starts up without running engine, again fans off so switches off, locks up and fans cut back in, so leaves it and looks around the store (fortunately a 24hr store).
Comes out and starts car EML on but no fans.
Drove to Bristol no problems, pushed to see if fault would reoccur but didn't.
During service a couple of codes recorded.

Check code cylinder 4.

Swap plugs and coils round. Still cylinder 4.
I think it's the hpfp.

The reason I'm looking for new wheels at the moment.

Whatever it turns out to be Chris, it should be covered by the extended warranty. If you have already had the hpfp replaced, coils are probably next on the list of usual suspects.

The Head technician at my local dealers said HPfp always throws up a fault code on number 4 cylinder. Not a massively expensive job, you can buy the pump for under £400 and it’s possible to diy fit, but my dealer said they could fit one in less than an hour. :thumbup:
