Im not sure about petrol, but in a diesel as long as your revs are where the torque is, it doesnt matter what gear your in. You can do motorway speeds in 4th. It wouldnt sound very good and kill your mpg though.

The 156 does really demand a gear drop to carry out a quick overtake however. Revs are too low otherwise and it simply doesn't have the torque. It's a cracking little engine though.
