Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia at the Nürburgring

Postby tonyrcz » Fri May 06, 2011 11:55 pm

Having gained an encouraging podium place in the opening round of the 2011 VLN Series, ‘Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia’ powered their Kumho-shod RCZ 2.0 HDi Sport Coupes to a dominant 1st and 2nd in class in round two at the Nürburgring last weekend (April 30).

It was the German Michael Bohrer who placed Peugeot No.545 on pole for the category with a best lap of 9:55.224 minutes, and he and his team mates Stéphane Caillet and Jürgen Nett who achieved the victory – averaging 137.777 kph (circa 86.1 mph) over the four hours of the event. The second-placed Peugeot No.546 of Alexandre Premat, Olivier Perez and Guillaume Roman was just over three minutes adrift at the end of the race.

Former F3 Euro Series, DTM and Le Mans competitor Premat was using the race to prepare and qualify for the 39th Nürburgring 24 Hour event in June, for which the team’s aim of a class win now looks more than feasible. The 29 year old Frenchman commented, “I was very positively surprised by the grip, torque and acceleration of the RCZ on such a technical circuit.” Jürgen Nett, who achieved the fastest lap for the class of 10:05.103 minutes, was also quick to praise, “I must congratulate the team for the race strategy and our tyre partner Kumho for the S700 slicks. During my eight 14-mile laps, the times varied by no more than two seconds.” Stéphane Caillet reported, “The balance of our Peugeot RCZ is just a dream.”

Said Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson, “This team is clearly fully into its stride already and it’s very encouraging to learn how well our tyres our working and how well the cars handle on them.”

A stellar trio of drivers lined-up for the Nürburgring 24 Hours

‘Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia’ continued their winning ways with a third successive podium in last weekend’s (May 15) VLN race at the Nürburgring, making the Peugeot RCZ 2.0 HDi FAP the most successful diesel-powered model currently running in the championship. After six demanding hours at the wheel, the Kumho-shod entry of Bohrer, Caillet and Nett finished second in class and the similarly slick-tyred car of Cochet, Premat, Perez and Ayari came home a fighting fourth – only narrowly missing joining their team-mates on the rostrum.

Said a happy Michael Bohrer: “Both cars again ran without any problems, requiring no work from our pit crew apart from refuelling and driver changes.” An equally enthusiastic Stéphane Caillet commented: “We have increased the track and camber which, in combination with the Kumho tyres, has gained us a few valuable seconds per lap.” Bohrer achieved the fastest qualifying time of the team, circulating the white RCZ in 9:53.677 minutes.

Le Mans star Bruce Jouanny joins team for Nürburgring 24 Hours

The team’s very realistic ambition of class victory in the 39th Nürburgring 24 Hour race on June 23-26 has been further bolstered by the signing of Le Mans LMP1 star Bruce Jouanny – he will join Alex Premat and Jonathan Cochet in the ‘professional’ car. A good personal friend of his two team-mates, Jouanny will contest rounds four and five of the VLN championship in order to qualify for the 24 Hour race.

Said Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson: “Bearing in mind their excellent results to date and their strong driver line-up, the RCZ team have given themselves an excellent chance of achieving their goals in the 24 Hour race. We are very much looking forward to the event.”

‘Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia’ recovered from a challenging start to achieve class victory in round four of the VLN Series at the Nürburgring (May 31) – this was the Kumho-shod team’s second overall win and maintains their record of finishing on the podium at every round to date.

Following a qualifying accident that sidelined the black RCZ of Jouanny, Ayari, Perez and Cochet, Le Mans star Jouanny joined the white sister car of Bohrer, Caillet and Nett – a drive required for him to gain entry to the circuit’s upcoming 24 hour race. Bohrer’s best qualifying lap of 9:51.887 minutes (the team’s fastest so far) put the quartet in a great position and, just hours after being punted into the guardrail, Jouanny found himself part of the winning team. Not only is the Bohrer, Caillet and Nett Peugeot currently the most successful diesel-powered car in the VLN Series, it currently lies in an astonishing 18th place overall out of 800 participants.

The black RCZ will be repaired in time for round five of the Series on June 11, when Jouanny will expect to complete his qualification for the 39th running of the famous 24 Hour race, in which ‘Team Peugeot RCZ Nokia’ are determined to achieve class victory.

Commenting on the equipe’s latest success, Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson said, “It’s great to see this well organised team continuing to successfully develop their cars and overcome any difficulties that come their way. We’re delighted with the way they get ever more out of their Kumho slick tyres en route to podium after podium. Long may it last.”

Peugeot RCZ Team Nokia is certainly enjoying a season of success in the Nürgurgring-based VLN race series. The sixth race of the 10 round championship (July 30) saw the pair of Kumho-shod 207 Coupes once more finish 1st and 2nd in class, while simultaneously dominating the diesel category; which they’ve made their own since the beginning of the season.

As usual, the equipe’s white car (No. 545) was the star. Driven by the well practised trio of Michael Bohrer, Stéphane Cailliet and Jürgen Nett, it achieved pole position for the class in qualifying (courtesy of wet weather Kumho tyres) and was the first of the two Peugeots to cross the finish line in the race. In Caillet’s capable hands, it even achieved a new fastest lap of 9:41.946 minutes for the model around the daunting 12.9 mile course. Firmer suspension and improved steering evidently helped bring about the improvement.

The delighted team manager, Timo Frings, was also quick to praise the achievement of the three Frenchmen aboard his black car, none of whom had previously competed at the Nürburgring and who had suffered a turbocharger problem in qualifying – they took the chequered flag two laps behind their team-mates. The next round of the series is a six hour race on August 27.

Commented Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson, “It is very rewarding to see the 207 RCZs winning time after time, and the team’s cars working so well on our tyres whatever the conditions. We wish them all the very best for the remaining four rounds of the championship.”

RCZ is the only car to make the Audi TT appear dated, and is officially the sexiest car on the road.
